The honest part

Six inches will not save a driveway poured on saturated sand with a downspout at the edge; it will crack later and cost more. A 4-inch slab on 4 inches of compacted limerock with edge steel and joints cut within 12 hours outlasts a 6-inch slab on nothing. Spend on base first, thickness second, and thickness only where the load asks for it. What it costs to go thicker

A 480 square foot driveway at 4 inches takes about 6 cubic yards of concrete; at 6 inches it takes about 9. At $175 to $280 per delivered yard in this market, that is roughly $525 to $840 of additional material. Add the rebar grid that belongs in a 6-inch slab and the extra excavation and haul-off, and the installed difference in our index is about $3.00 per square foot, so $1,440 on that driveway.

Which is why the right answer is usually a hybrid: 4 inches through the field where the cars sit, 6 inches at the apron where the delivery trucks turn, and 6 inches on the pad where the boat lives. A proposal that specifies one thickness everywhere is either overcharging for the patio or undercharging for the boat pad.

Thickness is the last thing to fix a base problem

Homeowners frequently ask whether going to 6 inches will stop the cracking they had before. On Osceola's fine sand the answer is usually no. A thicker slab spans a slightly wider void before it cracks and is stiffer at the edges, which helps, but the void keeps growing as long as roof water is washing sand out from under the edge. The same money spent on proper compaction, an extra two inches of limerock and a downspout extension buys more service life than two inches of concrete.

The order of priorities we use when a budget is fixed: drainage first, base second, joints third, thickness fourth, reinforcement fifth, strength last. Practical answer

The hybrid specification most driveways should have

Almost no residential driveway needs one thickness across its whole area, and specifying a single thickness is either overbuilding the parking area or underbuilding the apron. What we most often propose is four inches through the field where cars sit, six inches at the apron where delivery vehicles and the occasional heavy truck turn in, and six inches with a grid on any pad where a boat, a camper or a trailer will stand.

The cost of that hybrid is modest, because the six-inch sections are a small share of the total area, and it puts the concrete where the loads are. A proposal that quotes four inches everywhere on a property with a boat, or six inches everywhere on a property with two saloon cars, has not asked what will use it.

Honest limits

What six inches does not fix

It does not stop shrinkage cracking, which is controlled by joints and curing. It does not stop settlement, which is controlled by base and drainage. It does not compensate for a base that was never compacted, because a thicker slab over a void still bridges a void, just for slightly longer. And it does not make a slab watertight or stain-resistant.

What it does is carry a heavier load without cracking, resist edge breakage under concentrated wheel loads, and give reinforcement somewhere useful to sit. Those are real and specific benefits, and specifying six inches for any other reason is buying concrete instead of buying the thing that was actually needed.

If you are writing a brief for three contractors, the useful phrasing is by use rather than by number. Four inches at three thousand psi with fibre and number four bars at the edges through the parking area. Six inches at four thousand psi with a number four grid at eighteen inches on chairs under the boat pad and at the apron. Base as specified, compacted in lifts. Joints at ten feet in the four inch work, twelve to fifteen in the six.

Written that way, a contractor either prices it or explains why they would do something different, and both answers are useful. Written as a single thickness for the whole job, you get three quotes for three different things.
