What we build and where the line is

We build decorative segmental walls, seat walls, planters, raised terraces, fire pits, grill surrounds and outdoor kitchen structures in block and paver systems. Those are landscape elements: they hold a modest grade change or they hold themselves up, and they are built with the manufacturer's system, a compacted base, a drainage layer behind the face and geogrid where the system calls for it.

What we do not build is a structural retaining wall, meaning one that holds a significant grade change, carries a surcharge from a driveway or a structure above it, or exceeds the height at which the jurisdiction requires engineering. Those need a design from an engineer and a licensed contractor, and we will say so and step aside rather than build to a rule of thumb. The distinction matters because a wall that fails is not a cosmetic problem.

What an outdoor kitchen needs from us before the appliances arrive

The structure, the surface and the services, in that order. The structure is a block or paver-faced frame on a footing sized for the load, built to the appliance manufacturer's cut-out dimensions rather than to a generic drawing, with ventilation where a built-in grill requires it. The surface is the counter, cast concrete, stone or porcelain, with the overhang and the edge profile decided early because they affect the frame.

The services are gas, electrical and sometimes water, all of which are licensed trades we coordinate rather than perform, and all of which need their runs placed before the structure is closed. The most common sequencing failure on these projects is a finished kitchen with no way to get a gas line into it, and the fix at that point is opening the structure back up.

The wall we most often decline

A wall holding a driveway or a pool deck above a neighbouring property, where the surcharge from the vehicles or the deck bears on the wall. That is a structural retaining wall regardless of its height, it needs an engineered design, and building it to a manufacturer's generic detail because it is only three feet tall is how walls fail.

We will build the decorative wall in front of an engineered structure, the seat wall on top of it, and the hardscape around it. We will not be the designer of record for the structural element, and when the honest answer is that a job needs an engineer we say so early, because finding out later usually means the work comes out.

Do you build structural retaining walls?

Walls up to 4 feet that hold back a yard, yes. Walls over 4 feet, walls supporting a driveway, pool or building, and terraced walls need an engineer and a licensed contractor; we refer those.

How high is a seat wall?

18 to 20 inches to the top of the cap, 12 to 14 inches deep.

Does a fire pit need a permit?

A wood fire pit in a kit usually does not; a gas fire feature needs a licensed gas contractor and a permit. HOAs have their own rules on both.

Why do walls lean here?

Water. No drain stone or pipe behind the wall, so a wet June pushes it over. Every wall we build drains.
