Polymeric Sand: When It Works, When It Fails, and How We Install It
The other half of a paver job
Polymeric sand is joint sand mixed with a polymer binder that hardens when it is misted, locking the pavers together and keeping ants, weeds and washout out of the joints. It works when it is installed dry, swept to just below the chamfer, vibrated in, blown clean off the surface and activated with a light mist, then left 24 hours without rain. It fails, as a crust on the surface or a white haze, when any of those steps is skipped, which is why half the new paver driveways in Osceola have ants by the second summer.
How we install it
- Pavers clean and dry; joints open to full depth (old sand vacuumed out on a re-sand).
- Sweep polymeric sand across the field diagonally until joints are full; work in shade if possible.
- Vibrate with a plate compactor on a protective pad to settle the sand; top off; repeat until the joint is filled to 1/8 inch below the chamfer.
- Blow every grain off the paver surface with a leaf blower; sand left on the surface hazes when wet.
- Mist in stages: light showers that wet the joint without flooding it, three passes, ten minutes apart; excess water floats polymer out.
- Twenty-four hours dry. Then seal, or wait 60 to 90 days on new pavers for efflorescence to clear.

The failures we fix
White haze on the surface: sand not blown off before misting, or a film sealer over a damp joint (Sealer Types Compared). Crusted top with loose sand below: too little water, or the sand was installed thin. Washout in the first storm: misted too heavily, or rain within 24 hours. Ants and weeds: regular sand, or polymeric that never set. Each is fixed by cleaning the joints out and doing it again properly, usually with a seal on top (Paver Sealing & Cleaning; rainy-season timing on the Pour Calendar).
How it is installed, and where it goes wrong
- The pavers are clean and the joints are empty to a depth of at least the paver thickness, or about an inch and a half minimum. Sweeping new sand onto old dirty sand is the most common failure.
- The surface and the joints are bone dry. Any moisture in the joint activates the polymer before the sand is in place, and it sets as a crust.
- Sand is swept diagonally across the joints and worked down, then topped up, because it always settles further than it first appears.
- A plate compactor with a protective pad vibrates the sand down into the joint and the pavers into the bedding course.
- The surface is blown clean with a leaf blower. Sand left on the paver face will haze and set there, and on a textured paver it never fully comes off.
- Water is applied in the sequence the manufacturer specifies, usually a shower rather than a jet, in stages, until the joint is saturated but not flooded. Over-watering washes the binder out and leaves weak joints.
- Nobody walks on it for the cure time on the bag, and no rain for the window on the bag. That last condition is why we watch the radar on sanding days the same way we do on pour days.

Ants, weeds and the real reason joints fail
Two complaints bring us back to a paver field more than any other: ant mounds pushing up between the pavers, and weeds sprouting in the joints. Both are symptoms of the same thing, which is loose or missing joint sand. Ants tunnel through unbound sand and deposit it on the surface; weed seed lands in the open joint, finds moisture and germinates. A properly installed, fully cured polymeric joint gives both far less to work with.
What it does not do is make the field permanent. Joint sand is consumed by pressure washing, by storm runoff crossing the field and by the gradual settlement that every sand-set surface has. Topping up joints every few years is normal maintenance, not a defect, and it is cheap compared with waiting until a corner has rolled because the edge lost its support. Storing the leftovers
Polymeric sand activates with moisture, and a part-used bag left in a Florida garage through a summer will often be solid by the time it is wanted. If you keep leftovers for future top-ups, double-bag them, seal them and keep them somewhere genuinely dry.
The same applies to the surplus pavers worth keeping from any installation. Stored flat, off the ground and out of direct sun, they stay usable for years and are the difference between an invisible repair and a hunt for a discontinued line. We leave a small surplus on site for that reason and tell the owner what it is for.

Can polymeric sand be installed over old sand?
No. The joints have to be cleaned out to depth first, which is most of the labour in a re-sanding visit.
Why is there a white haze on my pavers after sanding?
Either sand left on the paver face when the water went on, or the binder washed up out of the joint by over-watering. It can usually be removed with the manufacturer haze remover; prevention is a leaf blower and a controlled watering sequence.
